When folk's on these "Redesign my Kitchen" shows say that they eat out most of the time because their kitchen is so "outdated" and "non-functional" and "old". That is such American foolishness.
So what if your stove doesn't light without a match/lighter? Does it light at all? So what if you don't have a "working triangle"? You have a stove, a sink and a refrigerator. All within a few feet of one another no matter the configuration. One couple actually said they couldn't make a roast because of their "antique" oven--while they still had all the shelves in it. (((Sigh))). As if in the "olden days" folks didn't make roasts.
A nice looking kitchen doesn't make a good cook. A nice looking kitchen won't eliminate laziness. Sure, it's nice to have a nice looking kitchen but let's not blame the kitchen for the fact that these days, in this society, convenience and laziness rules the day.
That's all .

Some of the best food I've ever had came from such "old" and "non-functional" kitchens :)
I can't help but laugh when people I know make comments similar to these. You worded it best: foolishness.
Yep. The only time that kind of thing is justified is when the kitchen is NASTY.
Sometimes old kitchens have the coolest extra features...precisely because people actually cooked more back when they were built!
This is the product of this crazy privileged country, where EVERYONE who isn't homeless has running water, heat, electricity, refrigerators, stoves, etc. It's insane and so far gone to live in a mindset like that... They will have it a lot harder when push comes to shove...
This is a funny and timely post for me. We bought our house almost 6 years ago and it came with some older appliances. Well the only reason we now even have a new fridge is that the old one died 2 years ago on Thanksgiving Day.
However my stove is starting to act wonky so I am thinking it might be time for a new one (they ain't cheap) but its funny because a friend actually asked why we didn't get new appliances when we bought this place. Um....cuz the ones that came with the place worked.
Funny thing is I have become a damn good cook working with my old appliances better than I ever was when I had new shiny ones.
Hell, just last night my stove was acting up while baking a cake. Long story short I was able to adjust the cooking time at a lower temp and the cake was still fantastic.
The thing is most of these folks with designer kitchens don't even cook. Kitchens are merely showrooms but rarely is any cooking done.
Hi just found your site while blog-surfing. I totally agree with you on this one! I want to barf every time someone wrinkles her/his nose and says "I must have granite." Last night a lady was going to rip out perfectly nice solid surface countertops...what a load of crap! Seriously.
I like your blog, btw.
